Have you been experiencing bad germination with old seed stock? By simply storing your seeds in a freezer, you could be adding decades to your seed’s longevity. While certain seeds genetically have a longer life expectancy than others, all seeds can benefit from proper storage conditions. The bullet points below correlate with different storage conditions you can choose to store your seeds.
- Short-Term Storage: Cool, Dark, & Dry Location (above 65°F)
Average Seed Lifespan: 1-5 Years - Longer-Term Storage: Refrigerator Storage (~35-40°F)
Average Seed Lifespan: 3-15 Years - Longest-Term Storage: Freezer Storage (below 32°F)
Average Seed Lifespan: 10-100 Years
It is important to avoid storing seeds where frequent fluctuating humidity and temperatures exist. Be sure to only store seeds below 32°F if you are certain that the seeds have a low moisture content (~5-8 % moisture content). A sufficient moisture level for freezer storage can be met if seeds are allowed to dry for a few weeks in a low humidity environment. The colder the storage temperature, the less pest pressure there will be. Research has shown that optimal humidity in seed storage matters more than optimal temperature.
When selecting a storage container, breathable containers such as envelopes, seed packets, or plastic bags are be er for short-term storage of seeds. For maximum seed longevity, air tight containers are best. Air tight storage containers also offer the best protection against pests. If using air tight containers, make sure to seal shut the seed container in a room that has low humidity. When extracting seeds from storage, allow the seed container to adjust to room temperature before opening. Don’t forget to label your seeds!
