Our vision involves connecting people with heirloom crops on a personal level by showcasing the beauty and versatility of heirloom crops, promoting a healthy lifestyle and a healthy environment and enhancing knowledge about them.
Our future plans include hosting festivals to connect gardeners with exciting varieties and fostering a community of like-minded individuals passionate about organic gardening.
Our Story
Meet Mason
I was introduced to gardening by my Mom and Grandma as soon as I learned to walk. Gardening became my greatest passion ever since I planted my first vegetable patch at 4 years old. I enjoyed growing plants so much that I made it my main hobby. Little did I know at the time that this hobby would someday blossom into my profession.
I learned the art and magic of seed saving at an early age. Since then, I have been collecting, preserving, and stewarding hundreds of heirloom seed varieties.
After graduating from high school, I decided to start up Pure Heirloom Seed Company and pursue my dreams. I went to college soon after and earned a degree in sustainable food and farming from the UMass Amherst Stockbridge School of Agriculture.
In 2020, Pure Heirloom Seed Company became certified organic through the Ohio Ecological Food & Farming Association (OEFFA). In 2022, the company became Real Organic Project (ROP) certified. I have always been fascinated by the vast array of diversity that heirloom crops present to us. Yet very few supermarkets offer heirloom vegetables, herbs, and flowers.
Exploring and searching for my favorite varieties of seeds has been the highlight of my gardening journey. One of the many benefits of growing heirloom seeds is that they can be saved and will come back true-to-type as long as cross-pollination is prevented between species. This is especially important considering that we live in a time where patented, hybridized, and genetically-modified seeds are taking control of the seed industry.
Consequently, hundreds of treasured heirloom varieties have been dumped by seed companies that were bought out by large agrochemical corporations. When we save seeds, we connect with our ancestors who used and preserved these specially selected, time-tested cultivars over many years. With endless options to choose from, heirloom crops steal the spotlight at parties and social gatherings whether it’s in the form of a fresh-tossed salad or a unique bouquet.
I am very fortunate to be working for what I love! Along the way, I have been very blessed to have the most spectacular support from my family. Every day in the garden there is a new opportunity to grow… so enjoy the adventure!
